You will be a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of the open source community, Linux and related open source projects and are comfortable working with a variety of Hardware platforms. You will have a proven track record of delivering both engineering excellence, as well as hands-on experience with upstream contributions to major Open Source projects.

As Staff Engineer, you will report to the Director of Engineering, Open Source. You will find ways to improve open source software and its delivery in Linux and Qualcomm distributions, ranging from the Linux kernel, to userspace, security software and boot firmware, and working on Qualcomm platforms with distributions such s Debian, Yocto/OE, or Fedora and provide support as needed for customer applications of our platform technology. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in Open source software development, ideally as a maintainer and recognized contributor in upstream communities
  • Strong experience in software integration, packaging and the making of Linux distributions and ability to contribute significant changes to a Linux Distribution
  • Expertise in C, C++, Assembly, in a high-level language such as Python, Go, Rust and in common build systems such as cmake, meson, autotools etc.
  • Proven track record of working upstream and downstream
  • Strong understanding of system architecture, notably how embedded software, bootloaders, Linux kernel and userspace work together
  • Experience with continuous integration, testing and delivery, ideally with GitLab and GitHub
  • Excellent technical, communication and engineering management skills
  • Ability to write requirements and specifications and work cross-functionally with product and engineering teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
  • Willingness to travel globally as needed (likely several times per year)

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver key software improvements in (or on top of) Linux distributions in relation to Qualcomm's hardware and software strategy
  • Build scalable tooling and continuous integration mechanisms that allow Qualcomm to test and deliver common core software components and reference images for a variety of Open-source distributions
  • Interface with upstream communities and Qualcomm's internal and external developer communities through bug reports, code reviews and general maintenance of reference builds
  • Participate in OSS & upstream initiatives within the Qualcomm Central Product and Software Engineering (CPSE) department to improve software delivery through automation, quality testing and innovation
  • Represent the company at industry events and conferences
  • Mentor and build expertise in Qualcomm OSS teams

  • Linux kernel: Peripherals, Buses, Interconnects, Scheduler, Thermal, Power

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 4+ years of Software Engineering or related work experience.

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 3+ years of Software Engineering or related work experience.
  • OR
  • PhD in Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, or related field and 2+ years of Software Engineering or related work experience.
